In November 1966, Che Guevara arrived in Bolivia, on a campaign to free the country from its military dictatorship. While his small guerrilla force initially outwitted the Bolivian Army, there were eventually surrounded and their situation became more and more desperate.

In October 1967, he was captured, arrested and unceremoniously executed. In his backpack was this diary, a remarkable record of suffering and bravery, told with honesty and humility.
